Here are some activities for children with sensory processing issues.

  • Sensory Buckets

These are great because they're easy to clean up. You can use many different items in the buckets, such as, sand, water, rice, dry beans, beads or even shaving cream. Pour the ingredient into a shoe box-size plastic storage container with a lid. Add some plastic spoons, cups and small toys, too. Scooping, pouring, and burying are all part of the sensory experience. If they prefer they can use their hands.

Items Needed

  • A box/plastic container with a lid

  • Uncooked beans, or rice, shaving cream, sand, beads, water, or slips of paper

  • If wanted, spoons, cups, or small toys

Instructions

  • Put the sensory ingredient of choice in a box/plastic container

  • Add the spoons, cups, or toys into the box

  • Enjoy!

Finger Painting

Finger painting is a great activity for sensory seekers. Just give your child a piece of paper and some paint. You can also appeal to their sense of smell by using a variety of squishy foods to “paint” on a cookie sheet. For example, you may want to use chocolate pudding, yogurt or applesauce with cinnamon.

Items Needed

  • Paint

  • Small bowls

  • Paper

  • Paper Towels

  • Water

Instructions

  • Pour out a small amount of paint in each bowl and add a tiny bit of water to make it easier to paint with

  • Prep the area with paper towels or newspaper so it doesn't get too messy

  • Let your child paint, ask them if they can make flowers or other shapes.
