As most of us have been in lock down for 5 months, we might have run out of activities with our special needs children. It's also hard to get them involved in new activities if they don't have an interest in them. So here are some activities that my family found worked for us. I’ve sorted them out into categories.
Sensory activities
Play dough
When quarantine started we made a big batch of play dough ( If you need a recipe, check out the post I made) and made a box with all the play dough toys. In the box we included rolling pins, butter knives, cookie cutters, and a plastic pizza cutter. We also added a flat board so the play dough could be rolled out on that.
Water play
It's summer and the temperatures have been getting really hot so to cool down we’ve been using water. We either just play with the hose or fill the bathtub with cold water and add some water toys such as cups, rubber ducks and blocks.
Hand eye coordination activities
For these activities we used balls the size of stress balls
Toss a ball up and catch it with the other hand
Toss the ball up and catch it in the same hand
Play catch
Toss the ball and try to hit it with your hand
You can also have your kid dribble a basketball outside
Kitchen Time
While you're cooking you can have your child help with that. They can help knead the dough, wash the vegetables, cut some vegetables ( only if they know how to use a knife)
Garden Play
If you have a garden, then they can help there. They can water the plants, help dig or pick the vegetables.
Story Time
You can also read your children books at night and ask them questions about the book.
